Larviciding with a helicopter

If you suspect that your helicopters’ calibration is incorrect, then it is your responsibility to call the Mosquito Control Biologist III to determine what actions should be taken. You are responsible for your treatments, not the pilots.

When applying liquid material:

If you notice low pressure on the spray system, check the spray tank’s filter for contaminants.

Questions on the spray system call Wayne Leuttich: 849-7433

Helicopter Configurations

Airbus – H125 – Liquid

Swath – 70 feet

Speed – 70 knots

Flow Rate – 26 g/min – 2.28 gal/ac

Platinum Granular Verification

Confirmation of the AgNav spray settings needs to be completed on the first flight of the day and after changing materials. The pilot should show the inspector the spray mode page and verify.

Material code when using dry material, the swath width, and the target application rate.

Chemical Mixing

Mosquito Biologists / Field Inspectors are responsible for the correct mixing of chemicals and the rates at which they are applied.

Mosquito Biologists / Field Inspectors are to complete the Larvicide Mix Sheet every time they mix or load a helicopter.

These sheets are turned into the GIS Coordinator at the beginning of each month.

If water was taken from a hydrant, make sure to document the location of the hydrant and the amount of water taken on the mix sheet.

Ground Larviciding
Background Information

Ground Larviciding Trucks

Field Inspectors are to document their chemical inventory, water amount, and starting miles before they leave the District.

When treating more than one zone, document your usage amounts prior to leaving the first zone.

At the end of the day record your chemical and water usage along with your ending vehicle mileage.

Inform Fleet Maintenance if you suspect a problem with the spray system or calibration.

The voltmeter inside the vehicle should return to zero when you stop spraying. This indicates the chemical pump has stopped.

If the voltmeter does not return to zero you need to shut the system down and call Fleet Maintenance.

When the chemical pump is working properly, the person spraying will notice the spray exiting the nozzle will be a white “milky” color.

If the spray is not white, but rather clear, you should shut down the system and call the Fleet Maintenance.

The ground larviciding system is calibrated for a specific rate of chemical delivery.

DO NOT adjust or tamper with these systems in any way. If you are concerned that your system is not working properly, contact the Fleet Maintenance.

Tomadol 91-2.5

Tomadol 91-2.5 is an adjuvant added to aid in spreading Provect 4E across the water surface.

Adjuvants are spray solution additives, and are considered to be any product added to a pesticide solution to improve the performance of the spray mixture.

Surfactants (surface-active agents) are a type of adjuvant designed to enhance the absorbing, emulsifying, dispersing, spreading, sticking, wetting, or penetrating properties of pesticides.
